Unified patent system

A unified patent litigation has been recommended to the European Council to set up a unified patent litigation system (UPLS) for European patents and, subsequently, when a Community patent system is agreed, Community patents.

New fee structure

The European Patent Office (EPO) this week published a notice summarising a new fee structure. This new fee structure is due to come into effect on 1 April 2009.

In particular the new structure provides for additional fees as follows

1. For specifications which are longer than 35 pages

2. A two-tier additional cost for each claim in excess of 15 claims

3. For the 16th to the 50th claim, there will be an additional fee of EUR200

4. For the 51st and each subsequent claim a fee of EUR500 will be payable
