Google v Amazon squabble hits consumers hard

The media world is dog eat dog at all levels, from the small business trying to get their break to the big corporations.

You can’t get much bigger than Amazon and Google.

While their feud has been bubbling away for some time, it seems recent moves have really hit consumers hard.

Google has announced that it plans to stop access to YouTube on Amazon’s Fire TV streaming devices from 1st January 2018.

This move comes after Amazon have previously stopped selling several of Google’s hardware products, including the Nest-branded smart home kit which was removed from its online stores last month.

Since 2015, Amazon has prevented even third parties from selling Google’s Chromecast streaming dongles on their sites.

Fire TV owners have recently received notifications pop up when they access YouTube highlighting to them the service will no longer be available from 1st January 2018.

In Google’s statement, they make reference to the tit for tat between the two corporations as they say

"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services. But Amazon doesn't carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn't make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest's latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon."

Amazon’s statement in response firmly points the blame at Google as they say

"Echo Show and Fire TV now display a standard web view of YouTube.com and point customers directly to YouTube's existing website. Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website. We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible."

It is clear here that the main losers are consumers who can no longer use Google’s and Amazon’s products without being disadvantaged by the other.

Consumers will continue to lose if the spat continues. It will be interesting to see what it takes to put this matter to bed.
