Quick Tip
There are numerous regulations one must meet when targeting goods or services for sale over the Internet. You must comply with Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) DS Regulations 2000 (DS Regulations 2000/2334). Certain terms must be included in contracts and specific information must be provided to the consumer. There is a two step process to comply with the notification provisions of the DS Regulations (2000/2333).
- You must notify the customer of particular information, including the compulsory seven day cooling off period ('cancellation') before the consumer buys any goods ('prior notification');
- After making a purchase the consumer must be notified of some of the information contained in the prior notification, as well as additional information, prior to or at the latest on delivery of the goods, via a durable medium ('subsequent notification').
Most businesses fail to adhere to these requirements and, in some instances, have been reported to trading standards. Don't let it happen to you...
