That's not baking

19 July 2010

By Ben Evans

Discount German supermarket chain Aldi has been on the receiving end of a claim of false advertising.

Aldi is advertising that it is "baking bread the whole day for you" and that it is "fresh from morning 'til evening". The catchily titled 'Zentralverband des Deutschen Bäckerhandwerks' (The Association of German Bakers for those of you not familiar with the finer points of the German language) has not taken this very well and has sued Aldi for false advertising. Their view is that Aldi is in fact not baking bread, all it actually does is re-heat part baked bread.

We look forward to the decision of the Landgericht Duisburg with 'baked' breath.
