The simplest and most effective method of protecting your domain name is to register a trade mark
A UK trade mark costs in the region of £450.00 and is an exclusive right over a particular word, words, logo or all three.
So for example, if i have the domain name www.abc-investments.com and i wish to protect myself i would register the trade mark 'ABC' I would then be entitled to take action against a third party through various avenues for trade mark infringement
Trade Marks last for 10 years and are renewable
