Bob Marley's Image Defended
By Waheedan Jariwalla
The descendents of the Jamaican legend Bob Marley are seeking to enforce their exclusive rights to an image that has grown steadily since the reggae legend died of brain cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.
The Marley name, look and sound reportedly generate about $600m a year in sales of unlicensed wares. According to Forbes Magazine, legal sales are in the much smaller figure of $4m.
The family has hired a Canadian firm to protect its rights to the brand.
The intention is to cut out street vendors, who peddle Marley's image on everything from coffee mugs to towels, and create a new line of products dubbed "House of Marley" with vigorous policing of the brand.
