By Waheedan Jariwalla
The Pakistani Trademark Office has proposed 300 per cent increase in trademark registration fee from 3,000 to 9,000 Rupees to meet the cost of automation of the registration process.
The new rates, which also include increase in trademark filing fee from 1,000 to 3,000 Rupees, will come into force after approval from the Policy Board of the Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO) in Islamabad, which works under the Cabinet Division.
Meanwhile, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry has endorsed the proposed increase with the hope that the performance of the trademark registration would be completely online showing improvement.
According to the figures released by the Trademark Office in Karachi, the total number of trademark applications filed till date is 274,672. The number of business marks issued is 61,103 while those abandoned or refused are 77,588.
